Day 10, Tuesday May 8, 2012

Rain! Oh, well. Off to Villandry, another Loire chateaux, after grabbing an awesome coffee and raisin pastry in Veigne.

This particular chateaux is famous for its gardens, which were pretty spectacular.

There were several different gardens in various styles.

We liked the hedge maze on the chateaux grounds as well.

One more view. It was a very beautiful location, even in the rain.

We had a surprisingly good sandwich and crepe before leaving Villandry. We then drove to Vouvray winery's storage and bottling facility for a tour. This winery is located in stone mining tunnels that are several centuries old. The constant cool temperature in the caves is good for wine making.

There were kilometres of tunnels and millions of bottles of wine aging in here.

The Vouvray sparkling wine (demi-sec) was the best we'd ever tasted. In fact, all the French wine we've had on the trip has been fantastic.

So, there are mining tunnels and caves all along the Loire valley in this area. And people live in them! They are called (no lie) Troglodytes. Yikes! We also saw a sign for Troglo Pizza...le yikes!

This evening, we had dinner at a Portuguese/Italian restaurant. I had Red Mullet in buerre blanc.
