Day 23, Monday May 21, 2012

Today was a travel day. We were leaving France behind and heading into Italy. The coastal highway was spectacular, with lots of high bridges and long tunnels. The hillsides changed a lot once we entered Italy, with terraced vineyards and lots of greenhouses.

We hit Genoa around 1:30, but our hotel was in a traffic restricted zone. After some driving around we got into a public parking lot and went searching for the hotel. This was very difficult to find. Fortunately, we got everything sorted out, and our room turned out to be an apartment in another building. Weird place, but kind of nice.

Whereas the French cities we had visited were very clean and full of friendly people, our first Italian city was dirty, run down, and full of kind'a scary people. Noisy too. But Genoa had its own charm.

We went to the aquarium down by the harbour. It's supposed to be the biggest in Europe. Other than smelling a little foul, it was a good place, and we spent a fair bit of time there.

 Kimberley really liked this chameleon.

Afterwards, we walked around the city.

It was pretty cool, and different from what we had gotten used to.

The cathedral in Genoa turned out to be the most opulent we saw on the whole trip.

We got a recommendation for a small, romantic restaurant, and the food was great. Pesto spaghetti to start, then a salad and chard-cheese pie for secondi. The car turned out to be safe overnight, so all was well.
