Day 24, Tuesday May 22, 2012

Where to start? We blew out of Genoa and drove a couple of hours to Firenze. Usual bull trying to get the car parked and finding the hotel. However, it was so worth it. Hotel Bernini is fantastic...such a welcome change after a few rooms that have been weird or lacking over the past week.

We immediately set out and found the Duomo, which was pretty close by.

The bronze reliefs on the door of the baptistry.

The front doors to the Duomo.

And, on the other side. In the background, you can see the line up to climb into the dome.

Kimberley wanted to climb the dome straight away. We got into the slow-moving line for this, but a couple of girls were selling jump-the-line passes. So...we went. The painting on the inside of the inner dome is really cool.

It's a double dome structure...you climb up in between them. And yes, it is scary.

We made it to the top.

And the view was spectacular.

We spent a long time up at the top. The place was crawling with people, and there was just one small passageway for everyone to get in and out.

After we got back down, we also went inside the cathedral. Which, after the spectacular cathedral in Genoa, was frankly a little disappointing.

Later, we did a couple of loads of laundry (clean jeans!), and then grabbed dinner at a very busy restaurant.

We had a salad and pasta sampler. The French really know how to cook, but I was enjoying Italian food more.
